What a superb job you have done with Two Wheel Thunder. Don't know how you can do so much and have the time. It is well appreciated, and fun to see that you have kept Short Track Racing, in people's memories. Thanks so much Eric, for keeping a young girl, of 15 years old, her Hero alive. Oh the wonderful memories.

With Love to You & Your's,

Hi, Thanks for the email. The new stuff is great! That's a lot of transcribing you have done. I like the San Jose history aspect of it. Great work. I live three blocks away from Cancilla's old location on 13th St; it's neat to read about that stuff taking place decades ago in MY neighborhood! Philly Jr keeps in touch to some degree, his health is not so great but he calls every now and then. If I can get him to sit still long enough I'll show him the new site. Some day we'll have to give due credit to Jerry Cooper of Milpitas. He was the guy who actually borrowed the photo albums from The McAfees, I was just the guy scanning them. Jerry is pictured with one of the Macs somewhere on the current site in one of the modern pics.

What you are doing with the preservation and sharing is very important work. Thanks Again for shouldering the burden!!!

  4. I have so many wonderful memories of my Grandfather Phil Cancilla. One that stands out was the time he took me for a ride on a dirt bike at Metcalf Motorcycle Park when I was about 6 or 7 years old. I got on the back of the bike and we took off. It was one of the best times I had and is what also pushed me to get my motorcycle license when I turned 17 years old. My Grandfather would pick my sister and I up every Sunday and he would bring us to McDonald's. I still get the same breakfast now as I did when my Grandfather used to buy it for me. After we ate at McDonalds gramps would bring us to his shop and my sister and I would drill holes into some pieces of metal and he would bring us back home all dirty and I'd tell my mom that I "worked" at grandpa's shop. There was one time that gramps thought it'd be a great idea to show me what it was like to weld. Well, I was probably around 6 years old, dressed nice with my favorite lacy socks. Gramps put me on his lap and we both had our welding masks on and he started welding. I thought it was so awesome until one of the sparks burnt thru my shoe and my favorite sock and then burnt my foot. I still have the scar! It was still pretty awesome though. Grandpa used to take my sister and I to the races and it always had a distinct smell. I never knew what it was but I assumed it was the burning motorcycle gasoline. Later on after grandpa passed away, I turned 19 years old. I moved into a condo that was right across the street from a Burger King on Capitol in San Jose. I don't know what it was about it, but everytine I stepped out the door of the condo Burger King gave off the same scent that the burning motorcycle gas at the race tracks gave off. I was reminded of my grandfather everyday that I lived there. I am very greatful for this website so thank you all so much!

    1. Denise, we are so happy to be able to bring to you and many others the story about Phil Cancilla, your grandfather and my dad's best friend in motorcycling around San Jose. Dad didn't idolize anything but through all the years growing up and in my later life, dad always loved telling stories of how great a motorcycle racer Phily was, there was no other in the world my dad would hand out those kinds of accolades except a guy by the name of Rex Staten, a motocross racer. I'm glad you enjoy the website...
